What we mean by "classical" Pilates

Our approach to a connected system of movement, passed down through generations and shaped around each person.

What we mean by "classical" Pilates

At Coconut, 'classical' describes our teaching foundation: the mat and full apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates, with established sequences and training passed on through his students. It helps us bring a connected approach to each person's practice.

A connected system

Classical Pilates connects mat and reformer sequences with work on the Cadillac, chairs, tower and barrels. The established orders provide structure, while additional apparatus exercises are chosen according to individual needs.

Understanding the purpose of each exercise helps us teach it thoughtfully and support each person’s progress.

Why lineage matters

Books, videos and hands-on teaching all support learning. Working with a teacher gives you personal feedback on details such as foot placement, breath and timing. Our teaching lineage runs: Joseph Pilates → Jay Grimes → Amy Kellow → Jade.

What this means at Coconut

People enjoy Pilates in many different settings. At Coconut, our focus is on small groups, the full classical apparatus and personal guidance. We help you understand the work, build confidence and develop a practice that supports your life.
